... la luna e il gatto, entrambi mutevoli, solitari, misteriosi.

Il gatto andava qui e là
E la luna girava come trottola,
E il parente più stretto della luna,
Il gatto strisciante, guardò in alto.
Il nero Minnalouche fissò la luna,
Perché vagando e lagnandosi come gli piace
La pura gelida luce del cielo
Turbava il suo sangue animale.
Minnalouche corre nell’erba
Sollevando le zampe delicate.
Vuoi ballare, Minnalouche, vuoi ballare?
Quando due affini s’incontrano
Che c’è di meglio d’un invito al ballo?
Forse la luna può imparare
Stanca d’usanze cortigiane,
Un nuovo passo di danza.
Minnalouche striscia sull’erba
Da un punto all’altro illuminato dalla luna,
La sacra luna sopra il suo capo
È entrata in una nuova fase.
Sa Minnalouche che la sua pupilla
Passerà di mutamento in mutamento
E che da tonda a falce,
Svaria da falce a tonda?
Minnalouche striscia nell’erba
Solo, importante e saggio,
E alla luna mutevole solleva
I suoi occhi mutevoli.

The Cat and the Moon

The cat went here and there
And the moon spun round like a top,
And the nearest kin of the moon
The creeping cat, looked up.
Black Minnaloushe stared at the moon,
For, wander and wail as he would
The pure cold light in the sky
Troubled his animal blood.
Minnaloushe runs in the grass
Lifting his delicate feet.
Do you dance, Minnaloushe, do you dance?
When two close kindred meet,
What better than call a dance?
Maybe the moon may learn,
Tired of that courtly fashion,
A new dance turn.
Minnaloushe creeps through the grass
From moonlit place to place,
The sacred moon overhead
Has taken a new phase.
Does Minnaloushe know that his pupils
Will pass from change to change,
And that from round to crescent,
From crescent to round they range?
Minnaloushe creeps through the grass
Alone, important and wise,
And lifts to the changing moon
His changing eyes.
